Effingham, Ill. – Earlier this morning Effingham County Sheriff, David Mahon spoke to us about the events leading to the passing of the Effingham County Coroner, Duane Guffey .
According to Mahon, Yesterday Afternoon at approximately 1:34 p.m., Guffey was contacted by the Effingham County Dispatch Center regarding a death case in Altamont when his wife picked up the phone alerting dispatch that the coroner was unresponsive, and she believed he suffered through a heart attack.
At that time the dispatch center directed her through CPR in order to revive him while Abbott EMS was on their way.
Soon after Abbott EMS was on scene along with Illinois State Police, and Effingham County Sheriff’s Department.
He was then transported to HSHS St. Anthony’s Hospital.
During the transport, Illinois State Police Trooper, Nathan Schnarre with ECSD Corporal Darren Feldkamp, and ECSD Deputy Dave Kinkelaar performed CPR on him, and managed to revive him before he arrived to the Hospital.
At the same time, Effingham Police Department assisted during the transport causing minor traffic blockage in downtown Effingham.
While there, Guffey experienced more complications, and was airlifter to St. John’s Hospital in Springfield where he was pronounced dead.
Jim Niemann of the Effingham County Board was contacted for further comment regarding the passing, however there was not an immediate response.

UPDATE (9:52 a.m.): We recently acquired new information Jim Niemann of the Effingham County Board is in a meeting regarding what will be done regarding the position after Guffey’s passing.
