
Police and Firefighters investigate a vehicle belonging to the parents of 19 year old Malik Murphy, who was arrested at the scene.
EFFINGHAM — The man arrested in connection with Thursday’s vehicle fire outside of Walmart on the Avenue of Mid America has been identified as 19 year old Malik V. Murphy, of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Police were called to the scene after several bystanders reported that a vehicle was on fire Thursday evening in the grass across from Walmart and that there was an individual across the street watching. When police arrived, a white Ford Explorer was completely engulfed in flames and traffic control on Avenue of Mid America was established. Officers located Murphy and questioned him regarding the burning vehicle. Fire crews arrived shortly after and began fighting the fire. Murphy was taken into custody on charges Arson and Criminal Damage to property.
The vehicle was owned by Murphy’s parents who live in Colorado. Further investigation into the incident is ongoing. Murphy is being held on a $7500 bond.
