Effingham, IL -(Effingham Radio)- Coronavirus cases and deaths dropped in Illinois over the past few days, but some area counties recorded increases.
Effingham County now has five COVID-19 cases and one local man died recently while being treated in a hospital across the state. The testing results are still encouraging for Effingham County with 89 of 100 individuals tested showing negative results. There are five pending cases, but two COVID patients have recovered.
Jasper County has the most confirmed cases of the virus in the area with 42 and another death, the county health department reported on Sunday. About 40 Newton Care Center residents and employees are infected with the virus, and three elderly women have died in that nursing home. Another COVID-19 patient is hospitalized and one has recovered.
Fayette County has reported 2 coronavirus deaths and now has 16 people testing positive for the virus. There are now 10 COVID-19 cases in Shelby County and 22 in Coles along with a death. All counties adjacent to Effingham County have reported positive coronavirus tests as of Sunday. There are only six counties not reporting at least one COVID case, including Edgar, Edwards and Pope in southeastern Illinois.
Statewide, the number of new cases has dropped since Thursday. There were 45,883 residents in Illinois testing positive for COVID-19 and 1,983 deaths, the Illinois Department of Public Health announced on Monday. More than 277,000 residents have been tested so far across the state.
