Champaign, IL -(Effingham Radio)- On Aug. 19, 2021, at approximately 4:46 p.m., an Illinois State Police (ISP) Trooper attempted to stop a motor vehicle for speeding on Interstate 57 southbound at milepost 246, in Champaign County. The vehicle fled from the Trooper at a high rate of speed. Troopers were able to identify the vehicle and located it in the area of the registered owner’s address in the Urbana area a short time later. The driver, later identified as Divontae J. Bailey, a 19-year-old male of Urbana, IL, fled the vehicle on foot and was apprehended by Troopers after a short foot chase. The passenger of the vehicle also fled on foot with two backpacks containing a firearm and illegal drugs which he disposed of while fleeing. Troopers were unable to locate him but recovered the handgun and illegal drugs.
The investigation into this incident is open and on-going at this time.
Bailey was transported to Champaign County Jail where his bond was set at $5,000, 10% to apply after being charged with Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding a Police Officer. There is no further information available.
The public is reminded that all persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
