10. 10 that’s the number of turnovers there were in this game. 5 interceptions 5 fumbles with the majority of those coming in what was one of the wackiest second halves to have been apart of.
Starting out Mattoon was strong in the passing game 3 quick passes and 2 minutes later it Jackson Spurgeon connecting with Derrius White for a 49 yard touchdown. Extra point was no good that made it 6-0. After a long drive stalled for Effingham, the Green Wave would strike again as Spurgeon went to the air again as that would set up a 3 yard touchdown run from Taeriek Grace to make it 12-0.
Effingham would get a much needed morale boost going into the looker room. With 7 seconds to go in the half, Tanner Pontious would find Caden Walls on a pass over the middle from 19 yards out to make the score 12-7.
And all that momentum was halted when White literally stole the ball out of Westendorf’s hands and returned the ball into the endzone for an Mattoon touchdown. Then some wackiness happened.
Effingham would throw an interception on the ensuing possession, then Mattoon would fumble the ball a few plays later. Luckily for both teams neither could capitalize on the extra chances.
In the fourth quarter both teams would trade turnovers once again. Mattoon looked to put the game away as they drove down the field only to fumble in the red zone. That would allow Effingham to score on a 79 yard touchdown pass from Pontious to Armando Estrada to cut the lead to 20-14. Hearts would try an unsuccessful onside setting up Mattoon in perfect territory to ice the game away. In the words of Chris Berman WHOP! Mattoon would fumble again on the very first play. That would give Effingham some life but ultimately all the penalties and turnovers were too much for the Hearts overcome.
Effingham falls to 1-3 1-1 in the Apollo and will go on the road to take on Taylorville
Mattoon improves to 2-1 1-1 in the Apollo.
