
It took an extra period but the Pirates were able to start the season off with a win by defeating Vandalia 64-63.
Cumberland jumped out to an early lead 15-9 after the first quarter, however turnovers in the second half allowed Vandalia to finish the first half on a big run and a lead 38-25.
Cumberland would storm back in the third quarter scoring 13 in the third while holding Vandalia to 6 points. In the fourth quarter the Pirates would take a lead but Vandalia would battle back and a late three by the Vandals would force overtime after Trevin Magee missed a volleyball line three as time expired.
In the overtime period both teams battled back and forth as Vandalia jumped out to a lead with a three pointer but Jaxon Boldt made a great move in the paint to get the basket and one. In the end the game would come down to defense and free throw shooting. Vandalia had the ball, holding for the final shot but Magee poked the ball loose and in the battle for the loose ball Vandalia got charged with a foul. Magee missed the first free throw but nailed the second one. Vandalia had one final shot with 3 seconds left but a halfcourt shot missed right.
Cumberland improves to 1-0 on the season and will face the winner of Newton and Dieterich on Friday at 7:30.
