Carlyle, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The suspected killer of a Illinois sheriff’s deputy is in custody after an hours-long, multi-state manhunt.
Ray Tate is in custody after he allegedly killed Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Riley early Wednesday morning. Illinois State Police say Tate initially shot Riley during a traffic stop on Interstate 64 and stole his police vehicle. He left the police cruiser abandoned on the interstate and then carjacked a semi and held the driver against his will until they reached St. Peters, Missouri. From there, he committed a series of carjackings, robberies and shootings.
Tate eventually made his way back across the river into Illinois in another stolen vehicle, which was eventually located at a rural home outside Carlyle. He committed a home invasion there and took the homeowner and kidnapped victim hostage. After a SWAT situation, Tate was taken into custody.
