Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- Alec Hiestand was selected as the District FFA Proficiency Winner in Forestry. Brandt Hiestand was selected as the District FFA Proficiency Winner in Poultry Production. Eli Arenas was selected as the District FFA Proficiency Winner in Diversified Horticulture and as the winner in STAR Business. Dennis Wollin was selected as the District FFA Proficiency Winner in Vegetable Production. Alec Hiestand, Brandt Hiestand, Eli Arenas, and Dennis Wollin are all members of the South Central FFA Chapter of the Illinois Association FFA.
Illinois FFA recognizes students in forty seven different areas based on their work-based learning, also known as Supervised Agricultural Experiences or SAE. FFA members who demonstrate outstanding agricultural skills and competencies through record keeping, leadership, and scholastic achievement may be considered for this award. SAEs allow students to learn by doing by either owning and operating an agricultural business, working or serving an internship at an agriculture-based business or conducting an agriculture-based scientific experiment and reporting results.
- Alec Hiestand was selected as the District 4 Winner by a committee of agriculture industry representatives and teachers knowledgeable in this work-based area. Alec Hiestand is the son of Daniel and Meggan Hiestand from Salem, Illinois.
- Brandt Hiestand was selected as the District 4 Winner by a committee of agriculture industry representatives and teachers knowledgeable in this work-based area. Brandt Hiestand is the son of Daniel and Meggan Hiestand from Salem, Illinois.
- Eli Arenas was selected as the District 4 Winner by a committee of agriculture industry representatives and teachers knowledgeable in this work-based area. Eli Arenas is the son of Andy Arenas from Centralia, Illinois and Stacey Arenas from Kinmundy, Illinois.
- Dennis Wollin was selected as the District 4 Winner by a committee of agriculture industry representatives and teachers knowledgeable in this work-based area. Dennis Wollin is the son of David and Tracy Wollin from St. Peter, Illinois.
Receiving this honor now makes Alec Hiestand, Brandt Hiestand, Eli Arenas, and Dennis Wollin eligible to compete in the State FFA Awards Selection process in Decatur, IL on Saturday, March 26, 2022. These members were previously chosen as the Chapter and Section awardees of these areas.
Mr. Bolin is the agriculture teacher and FFA Advisor at South Central High School.
Alec Hiestand, Brandt Hiestand, Eli Arenas, and Dennis Wollin will receive plaques for their accomplishments. These plaques are made possible by gifts by individuals, businesses, corporations and organizations through the Illinois Foundation FFA.
Other South Central FFA members who participated in the competition included Alec Langley who placed second in STAR Placement and second in Diversified Crop Placement, Chase Thompson in Sheep Production, Jacob Hilmes in Environmental Science and Natural Resources, Mitchell Brauer in Fiber and Oil Production, and Morgan Robb who placed second in Diversified Ag Production.

“Initiate”
The theme for the 2021 – 2022 State Officer Team is “Initiate”. The State Officer Team consists of the twenty-five Section Presidents and five major State Officers. This year’s team selected this theme to encourage individuals, teams, chapters, business and organizations to “Initiate” growth in their leadership, opportunities and experiences in FFA and beyond. The team also encourages and supports current and future FFA members, their activities and agricultural education.
