Springfield, IL-(Vandalia Radio)- The Director of the Illinois Department of Corrections discusses more on the Vandalia Correctional Center in a letter with area lawmakers.
Earlier this year, information surfaced about the DOC’s plan to consolidate the housing units of “Vandalia Proper” (commonly referred to as Vandalia Correctional Center) into the North Zone (still referred to by most as the Work Camp). Not long after this information leaked out, Vandalia Mayor Rick Gottman and area lawmakers worked to get more information with area lawmakers having a meeting with the Department of Corrections. And, not long after that, lawmakers sent a letter to DOC Director Rob Jeffreys inviting him to Vandalia for a Town Hall meeting.
On Wednesday, State Senator Jason Plummer shared a letter with Cromwell Media-Vandalia from Director Jeffreys. The letter is addressed to both Senator Plummer and State Representative Blaine Wilhour. The first paragraph of the letter states “I apologize for any confusion related to the requested townhall. The Department is committed to engaging in discussions with the union prior to participating in a public townhall, but we will of course be transparent with our partners in the General Assembly as that process moves forward.”
The second paragraph is very specific on the Vandalia Correctional Center and states “I do want to take this opportunity to reiterate that the Department does not plan on closing Vandalia. The consolidation plan at Vandalia allows the Department to efficiently operate the facility while ensuring there are NO layoffs or geographical transfers of staff. Vandalia’s future is essential to the success of IDOC and we look forward to working with you as we move forward. We are happy to answer any additional questions.”
