“Shelby County State’s Attorney Nichole Kroncke announced that on April 27, 2022, Ryan C. Rice, age 26, of Shelbyville, Illinois, was sentenced to fourteen (14) years in prison for the offenses of Armed Violence, a Class X Felony, with a sentencing range of 10 to 30 years in prison and Residential Burglary, a Class 1 Felony, with a sentencing range of 4 to 15 years in prison.
On February 16, 2021, Rice was arrested by Sgt. Paul Bennett and Officer Louis Maxedon of the Shelbyville Police Department after the officers, knowing that Rice was out on bond for burglary offenses, made furtive movements into his pockets where a visible bulge was observable. During a search of his person, officers located brass knuckles, a knife with a blade of at least 3 inches in length, a pipe with burnt methamphetamine residue, and a rock like substance that tested positive for methamphetamine. Following his arrest, Rice posted a $75,000 bond and was released from jail.
While out of custody and on bond for his Armed Violence case, Rice was arrested on November 25, 2021 for the offense of Residential Burglary. At 3:22 pm, Shelbyville Officers were dispatched to a residence in Shelbyville where a witness stated that movement had been detected by a security camera. The witness responded to the home to investigate and was confronted by an intruder, later identified as Rice, in the doorway. Rice tackled the witness and the two wrestled, ending up in the front yard of the residence. Rice then fled on foot with the witness pursuing. Rice entered the back door of a second residence where he was confronted by the homeowner. Rice again fled on foot and was pursued by the same individual that he had wrestled with. Rice entered a third residence where the homeowner, who was present, exited until police arrived. Shelbyville Police and Shelby County deputies responded to the third residence and located Rice hiding in a basement closet, covered with a bag. Rice was arrested and bond was set at $250,000. Rice remained in custody in the Shelby County Jail since his arrest.
Rice has previously been convicted of three misdemeanors, two DUI’s, and Driving With a Suspended License. Rice has no prior felony convictions.
Shelby County State’s Attorney Nichole Kroncke commended the diligent investigatory efforts of the Shelbyville Police Department and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.”
