WASHINGTON D.C.-(Effingham Radio)- Congresswoman Mary Miller (R-IL) announced that Carmi White County High School student wins the annual Congressional Art Competition.
Gage Atteberry of Carmi, Illinois won first place with his piece titled, “Petrification”. The artwork is a self portrait reimagined as a statue that includes original poetry by the artist.
“Thank you to all the students that participated in this year’s Congressional Art Competition. I am encouraged and impressed by the talented student artists and dedicated teachers that participate in the competition every year,” Miller said. “I am pleased to be a part of encouraging the next generation of artistic talent. Art enriches our lives and art education promotes skills that equip children for future successes. Congratulations to Gage on his winning piece that will be a beautiful addition to the halls of Congress for the next year.”
Gage competed against 13 other pieces of artwork. The judges for the competition were current and past teachers from Danville Area Community College.
The annual Congressional Art Competition celebrates the artistic achievements of the nation’s high school students.
Since it began in 1982, more than 670,000 high school students have participated.
The winner will be honored by having his artwork hang inside the US Capitol Building for a full year.
The second place runner-up in addition to the “People’s Choice” award on social media was awarded to the piece “Timeless Love” by Genesis Campbell of Lawrenceville High School.
