Marshall, IL-(Effingham Radio)- Dusti Bowling made a stop in Marshall on her Spring 2022 tour of central Illinois Monday, May 9 and Tuesday, May 10. She presented to students in grades 2-12. She told students about herself, her family, her childhood and what it is like to live in Arizona with all different kinds of desert creatures, which brought a new area of our beautiful country to life for Marshall students!
Dusti said that getting a book published is something she didn’t think she could do, so she didn’t try until she was in her late 20’s. She explained she was rejected over 100 times before she found a literary agent and finally got published. She emphasized to the students how important it is to not give up and to believe in yourself.
Dusti did a great job of explaining the writing process and gave the students practical techniques for writing. Other lessons students learned from her books were that everyone is different and is overcoming some kind of challenge, and that our differences do not make us outcasts. Everybody is significant.
Dusti described how she gets her ideas for her books from her life and the people she knows. Once she gets an idea, she spends years researching by reading books and interviewing people. She is passionate about not creating stereotypes.
The students’ reaction to Dusti and her books was positive. Students were inspired by all of her brave characters. One student explained that after hearing Dusti, he realized that his life experiences would make a good book.
