Vandalia Police Chief Jeff Ray says they were notified on Wednesday afternoon of a 4 year old autistic child who was missing. Chief Ray says they started the search of the area along with officers from the Sheriff’s Office and St. Elmo PD and they called the Vandalia Fire Department to help aid in the search. Chief Ray says while searching the area, Vandalia Police Officer Rob Thompson found the child in a retention pond just east of the Vandalia Water Plant off of River View Drive. Chief Ray says the child was in the pond and stuck in the sludge. Personnel had to use ladders on top of the sludge to free the child.
