Springfield, IL-(Vandalia Radio)- In the aftermath of the Highland Park mass shooting that killed seven and injured dozens, the debate continues about what should be done to curb such violence.
After a hearing in a U.S. Senate committee focused on the Highland Park shooting, Democratic state Rep. Bob Morgan said he expects Illinois lawmakers to act on more gun legislation, including possibly a ban on certain types of weapons.
Last count, Morgan said they have 55 cosponsors for a ban on so-called “assault weapons.” Republican state Rep. Mark Batinick worries a broad approach goes too far. He’s filed a measure to hold sponsors of people under 21 getting a Firearm Owner’s Identification card criminally liable for any wrongdoing.
It’s unclear when state lawmakers will return to possibly take up such legislation.
