Shelby County State’s Attorney Nichole Kroncke announced that on August 15, 2022, CHARLES M. COLEMAN, age 45, of Stewardson, Illinois, was sentenced to three (3) years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the offense of Retail Theft with a prior Retail Theft conviction, a Class 4 Felony with a sentencing range of 1 to 3 years in prison.
Coleman was charged with taking possession of various tools offered for sale at Ace Hardware, Shelbyville, Illinois without paying the full retail value of the merchandise. He had previously been convicted of the same offense in Coles County after a 2012 arrest. Shelbyville Police Officer Joe Houk and former Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputy Dustin Lustig identified Coleman from video surveillance after Coleman entered Ace Hardware a second time and an employee observed and documented the license plate on his vehicle.
Coleman failed to meet with the Shelby County Probation Department prior to his sentencing hearing for completion of a Pre-Sentence Investigation and Report. He then failed to appear for his sentencing hearing. A warrant was issued for his arrest. Coleman will be remanded to the Illinois Department of Corrections upon execution of the arrest warrant.
