Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The Unit 40 Board of Education met on Tuesday evening to discuss quite a few projects, as well as accept resignations from the district. One of those resignations was from Jason Fox.
Fox has taken a position in Decatur. He leaves with more than 20 years of experience in the Effingham School District, including as a teacher, coach, and administrator. Superintendent Andy Johnson stated that the position Fox vacated will be filled.
Board members also heard from Superintendent Andy Johnson about a $10 million State Early Childhood Construction Grant. Johnson said he learned of the grant recently, stating that applications are due October 10. He and other Board members began to discuss different ways the grant money could be used if approved, ranging from new early childhood facilities to building up East Side, to using the property west of the High School that is owned by the district. Johnson said that the requirement is that the district needs to own land where the project would be located.
Board members also approved the district’s crisis plan for the fiscal year, as well as a tentative budget. The Board also approved enhancements to the Effingham/Effingham County Enterprise Zone. The Enterprise zone changes have received support from all entities involved save for the Effingham County Board, who voted down the measure. That could change, however, as the County Board was only against parts of the proposed changes.
The Board approved bids for a new maintenance truck and two new vans, but tabled a price quote to repair the parking lot near the baseball field and football field since responsibility for the damage is still being determined. Improvements of up to $25,000 to the high school drama facilities was approved. An increase to $200/day for the pay of any and all retired teachers of Effingham Unit 40 who work as substitute teachers in the district as of October was approved, and purchase of a natural gas fryer for the high school kitchen was moved forward.
