Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The Cromwell News Team hosted Ralph Rounds, American Legion Department Chaplan to talk about some scholarship opportunities for area high schoolers through the American Legion of Illinois High School Oratorical Scholarship Program, which is a state-by-state speech competition with numerous chances to win money to use for college.
Ralph started by explaining what the program entails.
He said that interested high schoolers will need to be wary of how they write the speech, such as using quotes and direct citations. He also mentioned how just participating can land you some scholarship money.
Ralph also explained the process in getting to the national contest, and how any high school student can qualify.
Rounds then went over some of the criteria and gave some recommendations for potential qualifiers.
Ralph continued by giving more information regarding the process to sign up, and what potential participants can expect from the competition.
He also mentioned that this competition is not limited to one appearance per student through their high school tenure.

The American Legion National High School Oratorical Program, following successful Department Competition, was first conducted as a National Contest in 1938 with eleven departments competing. In recent years, approximately 30k contestants have participated each year, representing 52 departments of the American Legion.
