A close three point win for Altamont in the junior varsity contest would set the stage for what was an equaling thrilling varsity contest. Altamont came up short against state ranked 2A Breese Central but that was not the case on this night. The Indians came away with the win against 1A state ranked Casey 48-47.
The game started out similar to Saturday, as it was a defensive slugfest in the opening quarter. Jacob Clement scored a last second layup to give Casey the lead 8-4 after one.
In the second quarter Altamont finally found their footing and actually took the lead with minutes left to go in the half. A big steal from Jared Hammer, who ran the other way and was fouled on his way to making the basket. That would give Altamont their first lead of the game 17-16. Kienon Eirhart would also come up big in the quarter scoring seven. Casey would regain the lead back with some big baskets from Grant Cochonour and Hayden Parcel. The Warriors would take the lead back 22-20 at the half.
Then in the third quarter Altamont would come alive from beyond the arc. Avery Jahraus made two clutch threes and Mason Robinson six points as well, would have the Indians double up Casey 16-8 in the quarter. Logan Cornett would come up big defensively guarding Jackson Parcel all night and holding him scoreless in the quarter, to surge ahead 36-30 after three.
Casey a talented team would not go quietly after giving up the lead some threes by Cochonour and Hayden Parcel. Those would get Casey within striking distance. After a Cochonour three, Dillon Elam would eventually be fouled but would miss both free throws. Door left open. But Robinson and Hammer came up big on the defensive end. Robinson with a couple of blocks and Hammer forcing his man into a travel. That would set the stage with Altamont up two, Robinson who played every minute of the game, stepped up and made both free throws. Jackson Parcel would make a half court shot at the buzzer only for time to run out and Altamont coming away with a huge program win 48-47.
Altamont improves to 6-3 on the year and are back in action weather permitting on Thursday at Hillsboro.
Casey Westfield falls to 8-2 and are back in action weather permitting on Friday at Tuscola.
