Altamont traveled to Flora on Tuesday night to take on the Wolves and there was no conference tournament championship hangover here. As the Indians would use a strong defensive effort in the 2nd and 4th quarters to shutdown Flora and win 60-28.
The game started out close, as it was both teams looking to adjust to the other defenses. Altamont took a little while to get used to the strong zone that Flora was implementing. The Wolves also caused Altamont to turn the ball over three times. The Wolves would turn those turnovers into points as Trevor Johnson and Jacob Stanford made a couple of threes. Speaking of three pointers Dillan Elam was feeling it from long range, as Elam got it going and scored five in the opening quarter. Flora would tie the game and that’s where the quarter would end tied at 12.
The first half would continue to be close as there was four lead changes and a couple of ties. Both offenses had a tough time filling up the scoreboard in the second. It would eventually be Altamont who got it going, as Avery Jahraus would make one from deep. The Indians defense would also be outstanding, as they held the Wolves to just three points in the quarter. With Altamont up 17-15 in the last few seconds. Coach Niebrugge called for one shot but Elam got open and took the shot a little earlier than what coach would have wanted.
But no complaints about the result. Elam knocked down the trifecta to take the 20-15 lead into the locker room.
That three was just what Altamont needed to get it going. Flora made the first basket out of the break by Malachi Tolliver but then Altamont scored the next five. With another three from Jahraus and a basket by Kaidyn Miller to take the lead 25-17. The lead would only grow from there. As Elam would knock down back to back threes and Miller would finish with seven in the quarter. The lead would grow up to 12 after three quarters 38-26.
The Indians defense would be smothering in the final quarter holding the Wolves to just two points by Johnson. While Jahraus would make another three (mark it down for three for him on the night) and Elam would knock down another from range as well. Making it five for Elam on the night leading the way with 19 points. Keinon Eirhart would also come up big in the final quarter, pouring in seven thanks to some great outlet passes by Jahraus. Altamont would finish things off and go on to win 60-28.
Altamont improves to 20-3 overall. Win streak is up to 15 games. The Indians face another tough test on Friday night as they are hitting the road again, this time traveling to Nokomis.
Flora falls to 15-9 overall and host Carmi White County on Friday.
