Crane of West Hempstead, NY and Ashmore of Effingham, IL Honored
DANVILLE, IL-(Effingham Radio)-Lakeview College of Nursing (LCN) honored a student and a faculty member with a DAISY award. The awards were presented during the College’s recent Research Day to Alfonso Crane, an LCN student from West Hempstead, NY, and Keri Ashmore, an LCN faculty member from Effingham, IL.
Crane, a student on the College’s Danville Campus, was recognized for his genuine demeanor and willingness to volunteer with special projects.
“Alfonso is a bright student with an outstanding nursing career ahead of him. He is easy to collaborate with and is very approachable. Nursing school is challenging, and yet he finds time to participate in volunteering events. Alfonso’s academic and volunteering efforts make him the well-rounded nurse healthcare needs. He will be the nurse that everyone seeks for help,” according to Anthony Morgan, an LCN student from Champaign, IL, who nominated Crane for the award.
Morgan explained that Crane was the reason he decided to become a bone marrow transplant donor. “I was too nervous about the procedure. He (Crane) described the process and did not manipulate me or make me feel guilty for saying no. A genuine demeanor about Alfonso made me say yes to being a donor. Alfonso was respectful of my autonomy which is a hallmark of nursing practice. His actions today can significantly impact patients in need of bone marrow transplants and their families!” said Morgan.
The faculty recipient, Ashmore, has been a faculty member at Lakeview since 2019. She was nominated by Elijah Lamb, an LCN student from Greenup, IL.
“Professor Ashmore does everything she can to make our time at Lakeview meaningful, both personally and in terms of our education,” noted Lamb. He said she goes above and beyond in the classroom and at clinical sites. “At the clinical site, she goes out of her way to ensure it is a positive environment and that everyone’s assignments are considered thoughtfully…Also at clinical, she is routinely asking the nurses, techs, and support staff if they need anything while our group is there, and she helps all of us as a group tackle the unit’s needs, which helps build camaraderie amongst our group and the staff at the site,” explained Lamb.
Lamb described one time that the care partners were talking about being behind on bathing the patients, and Professor Ashmore jumped in to help provide bed baths. “The care partners expressed gratitude for this action because it relieved a large chunk of their duties during our clinical rotation. This lessened burden helped the care partners to maintain focus on each of their patients, which, in turn, helps to provide a safer care environment,” said Lamb.
Crane and Ashmore received a DAISY award certificate, pin, and a Healer’s Touch sculpture.
The other nominations for the student award included the following: Chelsea Grubb of Potomac, IL; Justin Munoz of Georgetown, IL; Shana Stanley of Urbana, IL; Nick Pontes of Northborough, MA; Carsen White of Danville, IL: Sengsavang Carr of Champaign, IL; Dakota Clayton of Sullivan, IL; and Mary Hyatt of Casey, IL.
The other nominees for the faculty award included the following: Gina Brassard of Milford, IL; Brittany Lawson of Paris, IL; Christina Smalley of Bismarck, IL; Shelby Bosch of Newman, IL; Debbie Kamradt of Tolono, IL; Mary Margeret Barkley of Danville, IL; and Ariel Wright of Bismarck, IL.
The DAISY Foundation is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of 33 from complications of an auto-immune disease. Patrick’s family was very touched by the remarkable compassion and clinical skill demonstrated by Patrick’s nurses during his illness, so they created DAISY to recognize exceptional nurses everywhere. LCN has partnered with DAISY to present awards to extraordinary nursing students and faculty members.
