Marshall, IL-(Effingham Radio)- Each year Friend of the Library, Daniel Garcia, sponsors “Read to Feed” reading program through Heifer International. Since 2016, Garcia has pledged to donate $1 for every book read in a six-week period to 5th grade students. Students start the program each year with a special kickoff at Marshall Public Library introducing them to the reading challenge. The motivating factor? Every dollar earned goes to support another person in need around the world. Students have an opportunity to vote on how to use the money earned, with options such as “buy a heifer”, “install an irrigation pump” or “send a girl to school”. This year, 40 students completed the challenge and voted to use their “reading money” to purchase a llama, trio of rabbits, goat, flock of chicks and Hope Basket to help a family in need.
Students also learned the value of life science by partnering with Clark County Farm Bureau to place chick incubators in every 5th grade classroom. Students not only met the challenge to read, but also learned about life science and were able to see firsthand the value of raising an animal and the impact it can make on a person’s economic sustainability. The reading challenge is in partnership with Friends of the Library who help make this program possible.
The library is located at 612 Archer Avenue, in Marshall, Illinois, and is handicap accessible.
