Effingham County Sheriff’s Office Warns Of New Scam

Today (July 19, 2023) a woman, who lives in Effingham County, came in and showed us this letter she received. She was concerned because the letter stated she had a Federal Income Tax Lien filed against her, but she may have the opportunity to collect a $6526.17 settlement if she called by the next day.

Some dishonest people search public records and find the names of people who may be late or have real tax issues. I dont know if this was the case here, but this letter is a SCAM. The letter clearly states you should call their 800 number because they need your personnel information from you. They have written the letter to scare you and make you believe bad things will happen to you if you don’t cooperate with them and give them your personal information. The only way this will end, is you losing your personal savings that you have worked hard for. Scammers only need a small percentage of people to fall for their scams to be successful, and it can happen to you or I.
