Effingham County, IL-(Effingham Radio)- From the Teutopolis FPD Facebook Page:
On Thursday 8/3/2023 at 15:45 hours, Teutopolis with auto-aid from Montrose were dispatched to a reported multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 70 eastbound at the 99.5 mile marker. This is within the ongoing construction zone.
Enroute dispatch reported no human entrapment however a horse was entrapped in a trailer. Upon arrival, C600 reported a tractor trailer, a pick up pulling a horse trailer, and a passenger car with occupants out of their respective vehicles. Further update included reporting a horse entrapped in the trailer that had been rear ended by the tractor trailer. Rural Med EMS personnel evaluated all occupants – all signed medical refusals.
Firefighters utilized extrication tools to make entry to the trailer working with the horse (Gus) owners to keep the horse calm. Once Firefighters gained entry, owners were able to remove the horse and walk him over to the grassy area in the closed eastbound lanes to evaluate his injuries.
Working with the Chief of Montrose C800 (also on scene), another horse trailer was brought out to the scene and Gus was then transported to the Chief’s property in Montrose were he is spending the night. The owners are also guests overnight at the Chief’s residence in order to keep an eye on their horse. A local vet was also dispatched to treat minor injuries Gus sustained.
The Chief of Montrose clearly went beyond the norm of services we all provide to the public.
