Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The Effingham Fire Department was on scene for two separate fires only hours apart from each other.
The Effingham Fire Department received a call at 0953 for a report of a fire in a jail cell at the County Jail. Upon arrival, there was nothing showing from the exterior of the building. A county deputy on the scene advised the fire was extinguished and it was confined to a mattress in a jail cell.
Due to the smoke on the first floor, fire units ventilated the structure. Two inmates were checked out by Rural Med EMS. Firefighters were on the scene for just under an hour. Effingham Fire Department was assisted by Effingham City Dispatch, Effingham Police Department, Rural Med EMS, Teutopolis FPD, and Effingham County Sheriff’s Office.

The Effingham Fire Department was dispatched at 1109 for a reported house fire with flames coming from a window. Upon arrival, crews had fire coming from a bedroom window of the residence. Crews utilized a transitional attack and were able to extinguish the fire in under 5 minutes from arrival. The occupant on scene advised everyone was out of the residence. Crews then checked for any extension of the fire.
The fire was contained to the bedroom of origin, this was because of working smoke alarms which alerted the resident, and the bedroom door was shut. The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office, Effingham Fire Department, and Effingham Police Department are continuing the investigation. Firefighters were on the scene for just over an hour. Effingham Fire Department was assisted by Effingham City Dispatch, Effingham Police Department, Rural Med EMS, Ameren Gas and Electric, Shumway FPD, Teutopolis FPD, and the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Cause: Undetermined at this time
