Springfield, IL-(Effingham Radio)- An industry expert says Illinois’ decision to lift the 36-year-old moratorium on new nuclear power plants is a win for the state’s economy and the environment.
The move will allow the use of small modular reactors, or SMRs, which are designed to be transported to locations to produce power, such as large factories. James Walker, nuclear physicist with NANO Nuclear Energy, says critics of the technology who point to issues with the disposal of nuclear waste are misguided.
Walker adds the SMRs produce far less waste than large scale reactors. Under the Illinois law, the state would allow development of SMRs in January 2026.
