Beginning in the 2025-2026 school year the National Trail Conference will be back to ten teams. Cumberland High School is being added for all sports to the NTC minus fall baseball.
Jamie VanScyoc principal at South Central High School and NTC President said in a statement.
“On behalf of the entire National Trail Conference, we are thrilled to extend a warm and enthusiastic welcome to Cumberland High School starting in the 2025-2026 school year! It is with great excitement that we embrace (Cumberland) as the newest member of our esteemed conference.”
“We understand that joining a conference is not just about competition; it’s about building connections, fostering sportsmanship, and creating lasting memories for student-athletes. We believe that (Cumberland) participation will enhance the spirit of camaraderie and strengthen the overall quality of our conference.”
Mr. VanScyoc also mentioned that it gets back to some normalcy getting the conference back to an even number of teams like the conference has had in years past. The NTC has been going through changes in the past decade or so with schools leaving, being added and Co-Opting.
As of now Cumberland will still play football in their conference as they are now, the Lincoln Prairie for this upcoming football season and beyond. Cumberland playing football in the fall will exclude them from participating in the NTC fall conference baseball season.
The move makes since for Cumberland with their athletic teams schedules littered with NTC teams already. The travel is more reasonable for all involved. And not to mention the connection that Cumberland’s Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach Justin Roedl as with the the conference. Roedl is a 1996 graduate of Altamont High School.
VanScyoc also said “We look forward to exciting games, friendly competition, and the opportunity to witness the talents and dedication of Cumberland High School student-athletes. Together, we will continue to uphold the proud traditions of our conference while embracing the fresh energy and enthusiasm that (Cumberland) brings.”
