Farina, IL-(Vandalia Radio)- Multiple buildings that make up the chicken housing complex for Wabash Valley Produce south of Farina have been destroyed in a Wednesday night fire.
The fire received mutual aid from throughout the region, including from Vandalia, Brownstown, Xenia, Salem, and St. Elmo Fire Departments. Dozens of fire departments were on the scene of the blaze that was discovered at 7pm and reportedly rapidly spread to other nearby buildings of the complex and continued to burn for several hours.
The plume of smoke from the fire was large enough to be picked up on radar, and it could be seen from as far away as Mattoon and Flora.
Both Fayette and Marion County Sheriff’s Offices provided assistance in traffic control and asked individuals at the time to avoid the area of Route 37 south of Farina. There have been no reports of any injuries.
The Office of the State Fire Marshal is now investigating the cause of the fire.
