On June 11, 2024, Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Southeastern Illinois Drug Task Force (SEIDTF) conducted a narcotics investigation that resulted in the illicit delivery of methamphetamine. ISP, DCI, SEIDTF and Clay County Sheriff’s Office and K-9 Unit made contact with suspect(s) at a residence in Louisville.
During the investigation it was learned that an individual(s) involved had attempted to flush an amount of methamphetamine into the sewer system. Law enforcement was able to secure the sewer system to prevent the narcotics from leaving the property. Law enforcement with assistance from utility workers excavated the sewer lines and collected approximately nine ounces of methamphetamine (estimated to have a street value of $20,000-$25,000).
As result of this incident 51-year-old Daniel L. Cornwell of Louisville, IL was arrested for Delivery of Methamphetamine 100-400 grams (Class X Felony) and Obstructing Justice (Class 4 Felony) and 55-year-old Mary L. Jones of Olney, IL for Delivery of Methamphetamine 100-400 grams (Class X Felony) and Obstructing Justice (Class 4 Felony).
SEIDTF is comprised of the Salem Police Department, the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office, the Robinson Police Department, the Mount Carmel Police Department and the Illinois State Police. This investigation was a cooperative effort among the area police departments in an effort to curb drug usage and violence in the area. The investigation was also assisted by the Clay County State’s Attorney’s Office and Fayette County State’s Attorney’s Office. The investigation remains ongoing.
The charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
