Dixon, IL-(Effingham Radio)- State police are investigating after three Ogle County sheriff’s deputies were shot in Dixon.
Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle says they received a called yesterday from a homeowner at 402 Wild Rice Lane, claiming her adult son was having suicidal and homicidal thoughts. Deputies tried to call the suspect on the phone before entering the home, where they exchanged gunshots with the suspect. Three deputies and the suspect, identified as Jonathon Gounaris, were hit by gunfire and sent to the hospital. Two of the deputies have since been released.

On Wednesday 06/12/2024 at 0839, the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office received a phone call from the homeowner of 402 Wild Rice Ln Dixon, IL. The caller advised her adult son was having suicidal and homicidal ideations. Deputies arrived on the scene at approximately 0905 hours. Additional information provided by the family member indicated the subject was armed with multiple firearms. Following the receipt of this information, the Ogle County Emergency Response Team (ERT) was activated and arrived on the scene at approximately 1020 hours. At this time, negotiators began attempting to call the suspect’s phone. After over an hour and in excess of 50 attempted phone calls, the decision was made to enter the residence. At 1151 hours, Ogle County ERT proceeded to the residence and was immediately met with gunfire from inside the residence as they breached the front door. ERT members returned fire, incapacitating the suspect. During the exchange, one ERT member was struck in the armor, one suffered a gunshot wound to the upper arm, and one member was struck in the face. The suspect, Jonathon G. Gounaris, was located inside the front door of the residence with multiple firearms, a fixed-blade knife, pepper spray, and ballistic armor.
Two members of Ogle County ERT were transported to KSB Hospital in Dixon, treated for their injuries, and have since been released. The other member of the Ogle County ERT was flown to OSF St. Anthony’s Hospital in Rockford and underwent surgery this evening. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery.
The Illinois State Police were requested to investigate the Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) and are actively conducting the investigation. Any charges will be filed at the conclusion of the investigation and in consultation with the Ogle County State Attorney’s Office.
