Altamont, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The Altamont City Council officially voted to re-open Wurl Lane as a one-way street from South Edwards to South Main Street Wednesday. It was a 2-1 vote, with Michael Walker voting no.
There was lots of discussion about moving the roadblocks further back to alleviate problems Becky Turner, who lives on Wurl Lane, has had with people using her driveway and yard as a turnaround. Turner said she would be inconvenienced by the roadblocks being moved, as she would have to go all the way down the road instead of just turning out to the highway. Walker expressed his view that opening the road back up even as a one-way road will become a “money pit” for the city with repairs to the road. Tayler Polk said the issue may be revisited in 6 months or so if problems persist, but voted to allow the road to open as a one way street, along with Terry White.
The Council also heard more from Stan Mehl about road conditions around the City, particularly Lucky Drive, where he lives. With pictures provided to the Council, Mehl gave details on how water stands in certain places, roads being uneven, and other road issues. The Council thanked him for the pictures and said they will continue to look into the issues.
The Council also approved:
- Announce Estimated FYE 2025 Appropriation
- Approve Street Closing Sunday August 11, 2024 noon – 9 pm of Ninth Street from Monroe to Alley North of Madison for St. Clair Catholic Church 150th Year Celebration
- Approve Ordinance 795-24; Authorizing Acceptance of Electronic Payments (convenience fee paid by customers)
The Council also discussed the new Sanitation Contract Changes and Customer Rates with those in attendance, with the owner of DBS Disposal there to explain what the new garbage totes will look like. The Council also said the rate for garbage pickup is increasing to $13.50/month, with an option for another tote to be added for an additional fee. The transition to the new totes will take around 2-3 months while the totes are ordered and delivered.
