Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- At 22:16 hours, the Effingham Fire Department was dispatched to a fire alarm activation at 1905 S. Banker Street, Bob’s Discount. Upon arrival, crews observed smoke visible through the front windows. The fire had been largely contained by the business’s sprinkler system, significantly limiting fire spread and damage. Firefighters utilized two water extinguishers to fully extinguish the remaining fire. Given the size of the structure, crews stayed on scene for over an hour to ventilate the building.
A subsequent investigation determined the cause of the fire to be accidental. Estimated damage, primarily from smoke and water, is approximately $100,000. Effingham Fire Department received assistance from Effingham City Dispatch and Effingham Police Department.
This incident underscores the critical importance of having a functional sprinkler and alarm system in businesses. These systems not only provide early detection and suppression, preventing potentially catastrophic damage, but they also help protect the safety of occupants and responding firefighters.
