Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The Effingham County Regional Airport held a ground breaking ceremony today to celebrate their expansion at the airport. This project has been in the works for years, but finally got the funding needed to move forward recently.
Effingham County Board Chairman Josh Douthit started the ceremony by explaining the details of how we got here, and thanked everyone who helped make the project a success. Josh, as well as Tony Siemer, Airport Commission Chairman, and Greg Koester, Airport Superintendent, mentioned that without funding from the state through the Rebuild Illinois Program, funded 90% from the state, this project would not be possible.
There were many city and county officials present for the ceremony, as well as state elected officials, including Brad Halbrook and Adam Niemerg.
The Airport Commission has been diligently working with Hanson Professional Services, Inc., the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the Illinois Division of Aeronautics on a runway extension for the Effingham County Regional Airport. The project received funding via the Rebuild Illinois Program and was officially approved by the FAA on December 6, 2023.
