Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- Firearm hunting season begins tomorrow, and a once small program for hunters to donate deer to food pantries has expanded quite a bit in just a few years. Hunters Feeding Illinois, formerly known locally as the Deer Donation Program, has expanded from just a few counties a few years ago to now covering 32 Illinois counties, with 14 different meat processors joining the fray. This program is designed to get lean deer meat into food pantries to help people who need it.
Michelle Fombelle with University of Illinois Extension, an architect of the program from its beginnings, stopped by the studio to give more details on how you can be a part of it, and how the program has expanded in such a short time.
We thank Michelle for discussing Hunters Feeding Illinois with us and sharing how successful it has become. We hope it continues for years to come to help families get food on their tables.
