On November 23, 2024, at 3:45 AM, the Effingham Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 304 N 1st Street. Crews arrived to find the house fully involved and immediately initiated a defensive attack.
The fire caused extensive heat and flame damage to a neighboring home at 302 N 1st Street. While the original structure at 304 N 1st Street was a total loss with estimated damages of $100,000, the neighboring exposure sustained approximately $50,000 in damages. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
Due to the significant damage to the structure, Effingham County K9 Search and Rescue assisted with a search dog to ensure the structure was cleared of any victims. Grunloh Construction and Effingham Public Works also provided a backhoes to aid with overhaul operations.
Crews remained on scene for over three hours to extinguish the fire and conduct overhaul operations. The response was a collaborative effort involving multiple agencies, including:

- Altamont Fire Protection District
- Edgewood Fire Protection District
- Ameren Electric and Gas
- Effingham Public Works
- Grunloh Construction
Station coverage during the incident was provided by Montrose Fire Protection District, Greenup Fire Protection District, and Neoga Fire Protection District to ensure continuity of service.
The Effingham Fire Department thanks all assisting agencies and personnel for their support in managing this fire. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
