On Thursday, December 12th, the Mattoon Fire Department was notified at 9:58am of a possible structure fire on the roof of the McDonald’s. Mattoon Police notified dispatchers that they could see smoke from Old State Road.
Crews arrived on scene at 10:03am to find that employees had extinguished the fire with very minimal smoke still showing. The restaurant had been evacuated by Mattoon Police prior to the arrival of the fire department. Crews went on the roof to finish extinguishing the fire while additional crews went inside the restaurant to make sure there was no fire in the ceiling area.
No fire damage was reported inside the restaurant, however there was significant damage to several electrical lines due to the fire on the roof. Crews overhauled the roof area to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.
Fire department investigators began a cause and origin investigation and concluded the fore to be accidental in nature due to hot work being done on the roof. Crews were using a torch as part of their procedures in repairing the roof, igniting combustible insulation.
The Coles County Health Department and City of Mattoon building and electrical inspectors arrived on scene to assist in assessing the damage. Due to the damage to some of the electrical wiring, the store will remain closed until repairs can be made.
There were no injuries reported and all fire units cleared the scene at 11:24am. The Mattoon Fire Department was assisted by Coles/Moultrie 911, Mattoon Police Department, Charleston Fire Department, Coles County Health Department, and City of Mattoon code enforcement and electrical inspectors.
