Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- There is a chance of snow and rain today, but the bigger threat for snow will be over the weekend.
Rain and snow will begin to spread southeastward into central IL this afternoon, and continue southeastward, exiting the area late this evening. Snowfall accumulations around an inch are expected near and north of I-74, but light or no snow accumulation is expected for many areas to the south from a mix of rain and snow. Temperatures will be up a few degrees today with highs from the mid 30s to lower 40s, then colder conditions will resume.
A winter storm will likely affect the area beginning Saturday night and ending Monday morning, possibly bringing heavy snow to much of the area, as well as the potential for freezing rain and sleet south of I-70. Highs will be mainly in the 20s Friday through Monday, then even colder temperatures are likely to arrive starting Tuesday.
While we’re not to the point where we can start putting out expected snowfall amounts for Sunday and Monday, signs continue to point toward a more impactful snow event across central and southeast Illinois. Areas south of I-74 and north of I-70 appear in the crosshairs at this time. The storm system in question is still out over the Pacific, so some refinements in snow location will take place as it comes onshore and computer models can get better observations of the atmosphere. The first half of the weekend should be OK, but if you have travel plans on Sunday, you’ll likely run into significant difficulties.
