Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for most of the area from 12am Sunday morning to 12pm noon Monday.
A major winter storm will bring heavy snow to most of central and southeast Illinois from late Saturday night through Monday morning, as well as periods of freezing rain in southeast Illinois. Snow accumulations could range over 12 inches in some of the area. Winds look to be strong enough Sunday night to produce some areas of blowing and drifting snow.
Chances are moderate to high (50 to 90 percent) of seeing 6 inches or more snow across central and southeast Illinois by Monday morning. There is up to a 50 percent chance of seeing over 12 inches of snow close to the I-72 corridor.
Snow and ice amounts still remain uncertain, however you should prepare now for disruptions to daily life, hazardous driving conditions, and closures and disruptions to infrastructure. Below normal temperatures can be expected today and Saturday with highs mainly in the 20s, and lows in the teens. Below normal temperatures will continue Sunday and Monday, then temperatures will turn even colder. Blustery winds gusting 20 to 30 mph can be expected today.
