Flora, IL-(Effingham Radio)- Governor JB Pritzker, the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS), and the Illinois Capital Development Board (CDB) announced the selection of 13 organizations to receive funding through the unprecedented Healthcare Transformation Capital Investment Grant Program. The grants, which total $200 million, will fund capital projects addressing health-related social needs and reduce disparities in healthcare.
Governor JB Pritzker said, “This Capital Improvement Grant Program will improve hospitals and care centers with much needed improvements, making it easier for healthcare professionals to serve their communities.”
Organizations were selected following a merit-based review in accordance with the Grant Accountability and Transparency Act (GATA) Uniform Requirements. Clay County Hospital’s proposal was selected as one of the 13 awardees out of over 50 applications.
Clay County Hospital’s (CCH) grant submission included several projects with a projected construction cost of $15.1 million. To be competitive in the grant process CCH offered to provide matching funds of 20 percent. The grant was awarded for $12.1 million.

Project included:
- Construction of a Clay County Health Department – 16,056 square feet that will be located on the northeast corner of the hospital property directly behind the Flora Rural Health Clinic
- Hospital Addition/Expansion – 11,388 square feet addition to the northeast corner of the hospital. This space will hold Administration, Clinical Educator, Diabetes Educators, Financial offices, Business office, Medical Records, and a Conference Room/Education space. This project moves all CCH staff on campus.
- Renovation of Hospital Inpatient Rooms – 15 rooms with new bathrooms, flooring, ceilings, headwalls, and paint.
- Nutritional Services Department Renovation – expansion of department for walk-in cooler, freezer, and storage
- Surgery Department Renovation – pre and post op rooms
Contingency for Renovation Costs: 5%
This grant will enable significant improvements and expansions, enhancing healthcare services for the community. Bob Sellers, President/CEO of CCH, stated, “the grant provides the funds to strategically position CCH in providing outstanding services to the residents of Clay County and surrounding areas well into the future”.
Mr. Sellers wanted to acknowledge the outstanding work done by Kamy Vail, Clinical Nurse Educator, and Jay Walker, Plant Operations Manager, in completion of the grant application and its subsequent approval.
