Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The Effingham Tax & Finance Committee heard how lack of federal funding is already affecting local services.
Effingham County EMA reports that Jim Niemann, former County Board Chair, is employed at the ECEMA through federal grants, with EMA Emergency Manager Pamela Jacobs also getting part of her salary through federal funding. For this year, their salaries are in the budget, but if federal funds don’t come in next year, the County will have to pick up the slack. The amount the County would be paying equals out to around $38k.
Committee Chairman Norbert Soldtwedel asked County Treasurer Deb Ruholl where the County stands as far as sales tax revenue for this quarter so far. Ruholl said the County is behind by roughly $80k, so the lack of sales tax revenue coupled with lack of federal funding will potentially cause a budget crunch. Soldtwedel said the situation will need to be monitored moving forward.
Other counties have also experienced issues with federal funding.
The Board also:
- Approved payment for Chamber of Commerce Career Fair
- Approved payment of final invoice for Museum roof replacement ($96,450, $40k to be paid by museum)
- Sent County Building first floor windows payment to full board for approval
- Sent flooring payment for County Building to full board for approval
