Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The Ann Crooker St. Clair Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution celebrated the DAR American History Essay winners at the March 29rd meeting. A brunch was held before the youth day awards presentation.
The American History Essay contest is open to 5-8th graders. Each year the National Society gives a topic for the essays. This year the theme was “Enjoying a new kind of Tea Party”. In the 1770’s there was a movement of protest in the Colonists against the British due to taxes and laws. Along the eastern coast a growing number of Patriots held “tea” parties in protest. In 1774 women in Edmonton NC, refused to buy tea from the British due to high taxes and laws. In Wilmington, NC the women burned their tea for the same reasons. The students were asked to imagine they were a women boldly participating in one of those Tea Parties in North Carolina. The had to give the details of either party, describe the party, and why they would chose to join them and then defend their decision.
The essays turned in to the chapter were then judged by a team of both DAR and non-DAR members. A winner from each grade level turned in was chosen.
Stephanie Mitchell, Committee Chairman gave a brief overview of each student, then Regent Brenda Wagy presented them with certificates and pins.
The chapter honored two students at the youth day awards. Both students attend Sacred Heart School in Effingham. This year’s winning students were Ava Dirks,7th grade and Ethan Parker,8th grade.
Ann Crooker St. Clair Chapter are proud to take this opportunity to recognize the outstanding youth in our communities.
