The Effingham Unit #40 School Board met on Monday, May 23rd.
The School Board began their meeting by acknowledging the hard work and dedication that was exhibited by all Effingham teachers and students for the 2016-2017 school year. The Board then gave special acknowledgement to the Junior High Scholastic Bowl Team, Junior High teacher Stephanie Mitchell, and Junior High teacher Lee Althoff. The Scholastic Bowl Team ended this school year’s season with a 25-6 overall record, winning the Crestwood Tournament for the second year, and a Regional Championship title. Stephanie Mitchell recently competed on Jeopardy! for their Teacher Appreciation Week. Lee Althoff sponsors the “Perfect Pals” program and was recently named as a recipient of the Rising Star Award from EIU.
Additionally, the Board hired new Assistant Principals for Effingham High School and Effingham Junior High School. Mr. McLain Schaefer was hired as the Assistant Principal for Effingham High School. Schaefer taught Social Sciences at Mattoon High School for the past eight years. He also has experience in leadership and has served as a cross country and track coach for both high school and junior high levels. Also, Mr. Charlie Schwerman has been hired as the Assistant Principal for the Effingham Junior High. Schwerman has spent the last nine years teaching in the Vocational Department at Effingham High School. He has experience as JV boys basketball coach, assistant football coach, and 7th grade girls basketball coach. Both men will start their positions on August 1st.
Effingham Superintendent, Mark Doan stated, “We look forward to having these fine educators join the Unit #40 family”.
