Effingham, IL -(Effingham Radio)- April 4 marks the 70th anniversary of the St. Anthony’s Hospital fire that occurred on April 4, 1949. It is in memory of the 77 people lost in in the fire that the hospital is now called HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital.
To respectfully remember those lost and to honor those who were touched by this tragedy, HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital will be conducting a memorial service in the hospital Chapel on Thursday, April 4 at noon. The public is invited to attend this brief memorial service.
Effingham County Museum Events
The Effingham County Museum is conducting their own commemoration events, which includes a series of lectures for the public. These will held be held at the Effingham County Museum, 100 East Jefferson Avenue, in their Second Level Event Center.
- Fire Lecture 1 – Thursday, April 4, 7 p.m.
The Story of the Fire Victims and the “Ripple Effect” presented by Linda Ruholl, RN, PhD.
- Fire Lecture 2 – Thursday, April 11, 7 p.m.
The Story of the Caledonia presented by Altamont Fireman Brian Lustig.
- Fire Lecture 3 – Thursday, April 25, 7 p.m.
The Evolving Story of Fire Safety presented by retired hospital executive Dave Storm.
