Update On Multi-Vehicle Accident Near El Paso, IL

El Paso, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The Following Preliminary Information is Being Released by the Illinois State Police District 8:

WHAT:

• Multiple Unit Traffic Crash

WHERE:

• Interstate 39 southbound at milepost 9, South of El Paso, IL

WHEN:

• Feb. 17, 2022 at approximately 3:13 p.m.

PRELIMINARY:      

• A preliminary investigation indicates the following occurred: Illinois State Police District troopers have responded to a multi-vehicle crash. Nineteen commercial motor vehicles (CMV) and 9 passenger vehicles were involved in the property damage crash. Numerous other vehicles slid off in the area but were not damaged. Several CMV loads were spilled on and around the roadways. At ISP request, there are 12 tow trucks on scene for roadway cleanup which will be occurring throughout the night. At approximately 6:35 p.m., ISP Troopers, with the help of our local law enforcement partners, safely escorted all motorists from the area to warming centers. No injuries were reported. Interstate 39 near El Paso was closed for the investigation. There is no further information at this time.

UPDATE: On Feb. 18, 2022, at approximately 11:56 a.m., the Interstate 39 northbound lanes reopened and at approximately 1:30 p.m. the southbound lanes reopened.
