Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The Effingham Board of Education held a regularly scheduled meeting yesterday at 6pm.
The meeting started off with a recognition of the retirees for the Effingham School District. Those retiring include:
- Carol Hoelscher
- Ellen Brummer
- Amy Niebrugge
- Bernice Schabbing
- Vickie Stuckemeyer
- Teresa Fuesting
- Penny Wiedman
- Cindy Matteson
- Karla Reed
- Ellen Broom
- Mark Doan
The total years of service to the district is 218 1/2 between all the staff. Mark Doan will be succeeded by Andy Johnson starting in July, after 11 years as Effingham Superintendent.
The meeting continued with the financial report and consent agenda, with the report and minutes from last meetings being approved. The Board also approved an E-rate proposal of up to $110,000 with the District paying 30%.
There was also approval given for purchase of instructional materials at the cost of $130k. Curriculum Director Chelle Beck said the materials will help with the instruction in English, Language Arts, Spelling and Phonics and will range from Grades K through 5. The thought process is to see what sticks and what can be changed. This pilot program could last up to 7 years. Also approved was the resurfacing project at the rear of the Junior High building. Assistant Superintendent Jason Fox said the cost for the project went up some due to the lack of base under the asphalt. Fox then went on to report that the South Side Playground work is now underway. Due to a delay from another district, Effingham was moved up the list.
Also discussed was the condition of the High School parking lot. Board member Jill Wendling asked if it could be patched up, but Fox said that the parking lot is past that point and will need to be redone completely. This will drive up the cost significantly, so the plan is to finish other projects before focusing on this project. Mark Doan then discussed the Unit 40 Foundation, and how contributions from the community made it possible for 60 scholarships to be available to students. Board member Jane Willenborg also agreed to another year as Unit #40’s representative to the Eastern Illinois Area Special Education Board. Steve Bone is the alternate.
Mark Doan also gave a date for the completion of the High School turf field. He said it will be ready by August 12th.
