Springfield, IL-(Effingham Radio)- Illinois drivers will see increased gasoline taxes next month, with another increase six months after that. In 2023, Illinois residents will see two motor fuel tax increases starting with 3.1 cents a gallon going into effect on Jan. 1 and another increase on July 1.
Josh Sharp of the Illinois Fuel and Retail Association claims this will hurt drivers in a state with already high taxes.
Currently, Illinois fuel prices sit 20 cents higher than the national average. Sharp said increased taxes will harm Illinois gas stations that border neighboring states.
In 2019, Illinois doubled its tax on fuel from 19 cents to 38 cents and tacked on annual increases tied to inflation.
