On Thursday June 8, 2023, the Mattoon Fire Department was dispatched to 3801 Dewitt Ave, Bimbo Bakery, for a possible commercial structure fire at 11:52 A.M. Dispatch advised that this fire was on the roof of the structure. Crews arrived on scene at 11:57 A.M. and found light smoke from the roof of the commercial building. Crews accessed the roof from the ladder truck and found there was roofing material that was burning. Crews deployed a handline and quickly extinguished the fire. Crews then began checking for fire extension. Charleston Fire Department assisted on the roof with checking for any fire extension. There was moderate damage to the roofing material around one of the electrical cabinets on the roof. There was some minor water damage to the interior of the factory that affected 1 drying line for product.
All units cleared the scene at 1:28 P.M.
The cause of this fire was determined to be caused by welding that was being done around the cabinet area. The company that was doing the welding were following all safety procedures, as they had fire extinguishers on the roof that slowed the spread of fire prior to the fire department arriving.
There were no injuries reported at this fire to firefighters or occupants.
The Mattoon Fire Department was assisted at this scene by Coles/Moultrie 911 (Ccom), Charleston Fire Department, Ameren Gas and Electric, as well as the contractors doing the welding work, and staff from Bimbo Bakery.
