Springfield, IL-(Effingham Radio)-A measure on the governor’s desk looks to end videotaped assessments for student teachers. In Illinois, prospective teachers are required to take a performance assessment that includes compiling video clips of lesson plans so they can get their license. The test is known as edTPA and costs $300. State Sen. Tom Bennett aims to drop that requirement with Senate Bill 1488. Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents of Schools President Mark Klaisner said education officials are skeptical of the usefulness of the video assessments.
Most educators say in-person evaluations by master teachers are much more useful. Both Bennet and Klaisner hope that dropping the requirement will get more teachers into the classroom.
