Vandalia, IL-(Vandalia Radio)- The Vandalia Police Department is currently investigating two separate incidents involving ATM burglaries and stolen vehicles.
In a report from the Vandalia Police Department, it says the first incident occurred on July 4th at 5:04 am when officers were notified of an alarm at the ATM at Land of Lincoln Credit Union at 925 New York Drive in Vandalia. Reports say that upon arrival, officers discovered the ATM had been forcefully opened and the cash stored within the machine had been stolen. The report states that investigations have revealed at least four individuals were involved in the burglary.
The report says that further investigations led to the discovery of a vehicle that had been Stolen from Stuff For Sale at 1505 Veteran’s Avenue. The vehicle was properly locked and secured and no keys were inside, but those that stole the vehicle managed to gain access to the vehicle and utilized it to attach chains to the targeted ATM machine. With that stolen vehicle’s force, the suspects were able to successfully pry open the ATM in less than 2 minutes. Police reports say the stolen vehicle was later recovered at the intersection of 8th street and Imco Drive. The Illinois State Police Crime Scene Unit was able to process the scene and the stolen vehicle and the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office also assisted in the investigation.
The second incident occurred early this morning—at 3:36 AM—When Vandalia Police received a report from an individual stating the ATM at FNB Community Bank’s Financial Center at 311 Banker Boulevard had been damaged. Reports say the caller stated a white truck was involved and then fled towards a nearby residential area. The report says that officers were able to locate the white truck and found signs of forced entry, including a popped door and ripped-out ignition. Further investigation determined the truck had been stolen from a residence in the 1900 block of Arrow Drive. In the second incident, the suspects used the stolen truck to attempt to dismantle the ATM at FNB. But, although they caused significant damage to the machine, they were not able to access the money inside the machine. Illinois State Police Crime Scene Unit and Fayette County Sheriff’s Deputies assisted at the scene and with the stolen truck.
Vandalia Police Department says in their report they are actively working to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible for the incidents. Both investigations are ongoing at this time and the Vandalia PD encouraged anyone with information related to either incident to come forward and assist in the investigation.
The Vandalia Police Department thanks the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Unit and Fayette County Sheriff’s Office Deputies for their support and collaboration in the investigations.
