In a week full of challenges and with the kickoff pushed back an hour than normal. After all was said and done, Effingham and Robinson took the field Friday and finished just in the nick of time before the storms rolled in.
Robinson would start of the new year with the ball and the Maroons drive seemed to stall. Instead of punting rugby style, punter Blake Green took off and ran 40 yards down field and kept the opening drive alive. A time out by Coach Hefner seemed to settle the Hearts down and eventually the defense forced an interception into the hands of Wade Bushur. Effingham would drive down the field but eventually had to settle for a 35 yard field goal from Maicol Sefton, for the first score of the Hearts season. The Hearts would score on their second drive as well, this time getting into the endzone for the first time this year. A deep 51 yard pass from Gaige Gillum to Andrew Lotz set up a 13 yard touchdown by Weldon Dunston to make the score 10-0. Another big pass play from Gillum to Dunston would set up Gaige to sneak into the endzone to make it 17-0. That score would hold till halftime.
In the second half Robinson would start off with some momentum in their favor. On the second play of the half for the Maroons, Reece Johnson hit Judson Pinkston on a quick screen pass and Pinkston did the rest running down the sideline and into the endzone for an 82 yard touchdown. The Hearts would cough up the football on their next possession and Robinson would recover in Effingham territory. Effingham defense came up big like they did all game long and forced a turnover on downs. The Hearts would find the end twice more in the second half. Gillum connected with Colton Webb on a two yard touchdown. Dunston would find endzone for the second time on a one yard run, all set up by a 16 yard run by Gillum.
Effingham would go on to win the season opener 31-7.
Effingham now is 1-0 on the season and come home to Klosterman Field at Washington Savings Bank Stadium to take on Mt. Carmel. The Aces come in to town 0-1 after falling to Gibson Southern Indiana 21-14. Robinson falls to 0-1 and go on the road to take on Taylorville. The Tornadoes are 1-0 after an impressive 41-6 win over Olney
