Vandalia, IL-(Vandalia Radio)- A man drowned Monday while trying to escape from Vandalia Police.
The Vandalia Police Department says that at about 4:43 Monday morning the Vandalia PD conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 70 eastbound at mile marker 64. The report says that during the course of the traffic stop it was learned that a male occupant of the vehicle had an outstanding warrant for his arrest through the Arizona Department of Corrections for a parole violation. Police say the male subject fled officers on foot and went south where he went into a body of water. Police say the suspect continued swimming away from the officers and eventually went under the water and did not resurface.
The Police Officers then requested the Fayette County EMA Dive Team, who arrived on the scene to locate the male subject. They were assisted by the Effingham County Dive Team, Keyesport Fire Department Dive Team and the Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officers. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office also assisted in the investigation. Police say the male subject’s body was recovered from the body of water.
At this time the male subject is not being identified due to notification of next of kin.
